William Chapman was born ca 1650-60 possibly in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts or in England. He is found to be bound to David Hovey for seven years. On 30 Mar 1682, he married Elizabeth SMITH, daughter of John SMITH (1621-1672) & Elizabeth [--?--], in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts. His indenture would have been completed at this time. Elizabeth died in Ashford, Windham, Connecticut Colony, British America, aft 1732; she was 76. They had four known children: William, Elizabeth, John, and Ann.
William moved and bought land in Ashford, Connecticut colony, British America in 1718. He died after 1732 as he sold this land to a David Smith in that year. His gravesite has not been found.
At this time he has not been found to be any relation to the Edward Chapman family living in Ipswich, Massachusetts or any other Chapman family in that area. Elizabeth’s line has been traced to William Smyth born ca1545 Hadleigh, Suffolk, England.
